WE FINALLY ARRIVED at Stockholm Central Station. There had been grumbling in the ranks so Father had decided we would get the tram for the last bit. Now we were in the biggest building we had ever seen. Mother stared up at the ceiling and sighed ‘Jesus!’ Father just snorted because he had seen it all before. ‘Pfff ..!’

We had an hour to wait for the train to the suburb where the paper factory was where Father had found work, and where our new home was to be. After wandering around aimlessly for a while Father said we should go to the café. He would order a coffee for Mother and himself and Tuomas and I would sit and not speak and be good.

When the coffees were ordered Mother started talking, because she had been silent too long and felt the pangs of not speaking her mind. This was not to Father’s liking but he could not stop her.

After a while, a man sidled up to us and spoke in Finnish. He was of the type that Father called fiksu, that is, a man who dresses smartly.

‘Ah, I see, new arrivals! I could not help hearing the old mother tongue. Let me introduce myself. I am a former pilot in the Finnish Air Force, twice decorated …’

He continued chatting in a very amicable fashion about this and that. He assured Father that he had friends in high places. At the Swedish Court even. He said the King’s son had been very well disposed to the brave Finnish people. He could arrange an introduction to a few people who would be good to know …

Father’s eyes narrowed. He had spent four years in the trenches mixing with all sorts and he had met a few shysters and card sharks. He had been under the wing of a released murderer who had got out of prison to serve at the front line. A civilian murderer that is, because at the end of the war they were all killers, of course. The murderer had taught Father a thing or two about the world.
